Are ESAs Allowed in Walmart? Breaking Down the Retail Giant’s Pet Policy

Walmart, a staple in American retail, has a clear yet nuanced policy regarding the presence of animals in its stores. Officially, Walmart only permits service animals, which are specially trained to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities. These animals are protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), granting them the right to accompany their owners in all public areas, including Walmart stores.
Are dogs allowed in Walmart?
The answer to this question depends on whether the dog is a trained service animal.
Walmart associates are trained to identify service animals by asking two specific questions: whether the dog is a service animal required due to a disability and what tasks the dog has been trained to perform. However, they cannot inquire about the nature of the person’s disability or request documentation for the animal’s training, as that goes against the policy laid out by the ADA.
This strict policy is in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all customers, as well as to comply with health regulations. Service animals are an exception due to their essential role in assisting individuals with disabilities, making them indispensable for their owners in navigating public spaces.
What about cats? Does Walmart allow cats inside?
You may have read the previous section and thought, “Okay, is Walmart pet friendly for cats then?”
Unfortunately, the answer here is no. Cats are not approved as an option for an official service animal per the ADA (service animals can only be dogs or miniature horses), so they do not have the same rights as trained service animals when it comes to store entry.

While service animals are universally allowed, the policy towards other animals, such as emotional support animals (ESAs) and pets, is more restrictive. ESAs, although providing crucial comfort and emotional support to their owners, are not considered service animals under the ADA. Therefore, they do not have the same rights and are generally not allowed in Walmart stores. However, there have been instances where individual Walmart stores, at the discretion of the store manager, have allowed well-behaved ESAs. This is not the norm, and ESA owners are advised to contact the specific store ahead of time to confirm its policy.
Therapy dogs, another category of support animals, are also not permitted in Walmart under the standard policy. These dogs, while trained to provide comfort to others, typically in hospitals or schools, do not meet the ADA’s criteria for service animals and are thus excluded from entering Walmart stores.
For regular pets, Walmart maintains a strict no-pets policy, primarily to adhere to health and safety standards. Despite this, some stores may have relaxed their rules, allowing pets, including dogs, to accompany their owners. Again, this is at the discretion of individual store managers and is not widespread. Pet owners who wish to bring their dogs into Walmart are encouraged to check with the store beforehand and ensure their pet is well-behaved, leashed, and properly managed during the visit.
Walmart’s pet policy is designed to balance the needs of individuals with disabilities, the comfort of all customers, and adherence to health regulations. While service animals are a necessary exception, the policies for other animals, including emotional support animals, therapy dogs, and pets, are more restrictive, reflecting the store’s commitment to providing a safe and comfortable shopping environment for everyone. Customers are encouraged to respect these guidelines and make necessary inquiries before bringing any animal into a Walmart store.
