What Is An Emotional Support Animal?

An emotional support animal (ESA), is an animal that can provide comfort for its human companion. Unlike service animals, an ESA does not have to train to perform a specific task. Many landlords, rental companies, and public institutions most of the time make an excuse to allow priority for emotional support animals that they will not make for other animals.

Places allow Emotional support animals to be with their owner, but not for regular animals. The places you can and can’t go with your ESA depends largely on what state and city you live in. It’s a good idea to have and keep your emotional support animal certification letter to show that your emotional support animal is not “just another pet”.

Under federal and state law, an ESA is not necessarily the same thing as a Service Animal. A service animal, as defined by the United States Department of Justice, is one that “individually trains in order to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.”
